Pecky Cypress wood is the result of a natural fungus that enters older living cypress trees through branch loss or fires that destroy the bark. The live tissues are then exposed, inviting airborne fungi spores in. This fungus then causes a brown pocket rot and the sculpturing process begins. This process takes years to make a Cypress tree Pecky , which makes the wood from these trees more valuable. Once the tree is harvested the fungus completely disappears only leaving behind the beautiful pecking that is so desirable.
Pecking is a characteristic of a fungus and cannot be designed or planned as to where the Pecking will appear or how deep it may be. Since our panels are fairly thin (¾ thick) the Pecking can leave holes in the wood. It can also be on the edges of the panel, which may look like the panel has been damaged or chipped. The lumber companies and we cannot change this.
Each Pecky Cypress panel is unique and one of a kind.
