SKINNING, FLESHING & MOUNTING A BUFFLEHEAD IN FLIGHT (Wrap Body)
by Second 2 Nature Taxidermy Supply with Terry Heuring 1 ¾ Hrs
This duck has some freezer burnt spots, so Terry starts by injecting water in these areas. He then continues with a breast incision and skins the duck, including inverting the legs and wings. A throat incision is made to skin out and clean the skull. A wire wheel is used to clean the skull, wing/leg bones and degrease the skin. The skin is washed in soapy water, then coleman fuel and tumbled. He makes a wrap body from excelsior. Dry Preservative is applied and the duck is mounted, sewn up and eyes set. After attaching the duck to a piece of driftwood, Terry works on positioning and grooming. He then finishes this mount with the painting of the bill and feet. The driftwood is placed in a base and base work is completed by adding sand and “water”. Resin is used to make the “water”. He then places shells and rocks in the “water”.
